North Carolina licensing rules
- Renewal
- A North Carolina PE or PLS license is renewed annually and expires on December 31 each year, becoming invalid if not renewed; the renewal window opens December 1, and late renewal postmarked after January 31 requires a $100 reinstatement fee on top of the renewal fee. The Board's rules set the annual renewal fee at $75.00 per licensee (21 NCAC 56 .0505(a) for Professional Engineers, .0606(a) for Professional Land Surveyors). Source
- Reciprocity
- The Board grants licensure by comity to engineers and land surveyors currently licensed in another jurisdiction, accepting the applicant's NCEES record in lieu of completing the experience, education, and references sections of the application, provided there is no record of disciplinary action; the comity licensure fee is $100. Land surveyor comity applicants must also pass the two-hour North Carolina-specific portion of the principles and practice of surveying examination. Source
