How to verify a Georgia professional engineer license

Content reviewed

Start by matching the engineer's legal name and license number to the record shown here. Then open Georgia Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors's official record to confirm that the PE license is current and valid for work in Georgia.

What to check in the license record

  • The name and license number match the plans, seal, proposal, or contract you are reviewing.
  • The credential is active for the correct profession and issuing jurisdiction.
  • The expiration or renewal date covers the date the professional performed the work.
  • Any limitations, disciplinary actions, or board orders have been reviewed.

Georgia licensing rules

Renewal
Georgia certificates of registration and licenses are renewable annually, with renewal for the following year effected by paying the board-prescribed fee; a certificate or license that has been expired for more than four years is automatically revoked (O.C.G.A. § 43-15-17(b)). The board's current fee schedule sets the annual renewal fee at $100 for a Professional Engineer license, $100 for a Land Surveyor license, and $10 for a Structural Engineer certificate, with a late-renewal penalty of $250 plus the annual fee. License number format
The board's guidance states: "The seal or stamp should include the complete license number including the prefix an [sic] all the numbers. For example, an individual license number would be PE999999 or LS999999. The No. in each seal may be replaced with the PE, SE, or LS prefix." So a Georgia license number is a two-letter profession prefix (PE for professional engineer, SE for structural engineer, LS for land surveyor) followed by the numeric license/serial number. Source
Reciprocity
Georgia may issue a certificate of registration as a professional engineer or professional structural engineer by comity to anyone holding a qualifying certificate from NCEES or another U.S. state or territory, if that jurisdiction's registration requirements do not conflict with and are not lower than Georgia's, or if the applicant already held the certificate on or before July 1, 1956 (O.C.G.A. § 43-15-16(a)). For land surveyors, comity licensure requires a qualifying out-of-state license obtained by written examination of specified minimum duration (or comparable qualifications), plus passing Georgia's written examination on Georgia surveying law (O.C.G.A. § 43-15-16(b)).
